Back in the Spaceship Again: Juvenile Science Fiction Series Since 1945 by Karen Sands, Often, literature for children appears in the form of series, in which familiar characters appear in book after book. In the late nineteenth and early twentieth century, authors began to write science fiction series for children. Much has been written about these early series, particularly the Tom Swift books, but comparatively little has been written about the wide variety of juvenile science fiction series of the second half of the twentieth century. To fill this void, this book provides a critical look at the history, themes, settings, characters, and construction of juvenile science fiction series published since 1945. The volume looks at such topics as animals and aliens in science fiction, attitudes toward humor, and the handling of science. As a special feature, the book provides a listing of the various series.
Science is Fiction by Andy Masaki Bellows, One of the first to plunge underwater with a camera to bring the subaquatic world to the screen, maverick scientific documentary filmmaker Jean Painleve (1902-1989) captured the throes of a male seahorse giving birth, the geometric choreography of crystal formation, and the mating habits of hermaphrodite mollusks. In a lifetime spanning nearly the history of cinema itself, Painleve made over 200 films, including "The Seahorse, Freshwater Assassins, The Vampire, and "The Love Life of the Octopus. His lyrical and instructive animal behavior films set to avant-garde scores were much admired by Surrealist contemporaries such as Antonin Artaud, Luis Bunuel, and Jean Vigo."Science Is Fiction includes Marina McDougall's historically informative "Hybrid Roots," Brigitte Berg's heavily illustrated biographical essay "Contradictory Forces," art critic Ralph Rugoff's "Fluid Mechanics," a Liberation interview with Painleve, stills from Painleve's most celebrated films laid out in storyboard fashion, and a selection of Painleve's writings appearing for the first time in English. The latter include "Neo-Zoological Drama," a playful romp on the behavior of Turbellaria, or flatworms; "Mysteries and Miracles of Nature," an idiosyncratic catalog of unusual animal behavior; and "Scientific Film," a discussion of science films that pays homage to Painleve's fellow pioneers. The book also includes French film critic Andre Bazin's "Science Film: Accidental Beauty," a review of the 1947 International Association of Science Film festival, organized by Painleve.Copublished with Brico Press.
Stasis (fiction) - Stasis (IPA: ) is a science-fiction concept akin to suspended animation. Whereas suspended animation usually refers to a greatly reduced state of life processes, stasis implies a complete cessation of these processes, which can be easily restarted or which restart spontaneously when stasis is removed. Golden Age of Science Fiction - The Golden Age of Science Fiction, often recognized as a period from the early 1940s through the 1950s, was an era during which the science fiction genre gained wide public attention and many classic science fiction stories were published. The saying "The golden age of science fiction is twelve", from the science fiction fan Peter Graham [Hartwell 1996], means that many readers use "golden age" to mean the time when they first developed a passion for science fiction, often in adolescence. Foundation: The International Review of Science Fiction - Since it began in 1972, Foundation: The International Review of Science Fiction has published over 9000 pages of articles and reviews about science fiction. Publishing the journal is just one of the activities of the Science Fiction Foundation; other activties include the promotion of the study of science fiction, organizing conferences, and maintaining the Science Fiction Foundation Collection (currently curated by the University of Liverpool), a large library and archive. MIT Science Fiction Society - The MIT Science Fiction Society (or MITSFS) is a literary society and library of science fiction and fantasy books and magazines, located at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. It claims to have the "world's largest open-shelf collection of science fiction," including "over 90% of all science fiction ever published in English.
